"I'm all for Christianity, but insolence must be put down."

- J. P. Donleavy from The Ginger Man
Editions from 1960 - 1969

The Ginger Man

Wraps | Olympia Press, Paris 1960 - 323 pages

2nd Olympia paperback edition with new cover design. Contains the slightly expurgated version that appeared in the Olympia hardcover edition published in 1958.

St. Oliver Plunkett. Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. Arrested by the English and put to death. Last Catholic martyr to die in England. Eventually canonized. Called upon numerous times as "The Blessed Oliver" by Sebastian Dangerfied in The Ginger Man and by Gainor Crist in real life.

The Ginger Man

Cloth | Olympia Press, Paris 1960

Hardbound with gilt edges. Most likely a re-bound copy of the 2nd. edition paperback, 1960. It's common in France to have paperbacks converted to hardcovers after purchase. Being researched.

The Ginger Man

Cloth | Taiwan 196? - 347 pages

Taiwanese piracy of the Delacorte Press edition. In English. No publication date given but probably issued before or around the time of the authorized Delacorte first edition. Dust jacket poorly printed. Very thin paper overall. Back cover photo of Donleavy looks photocopied.  About half the thickness of the bona-fide edition.

Wraps | Greenleaf Classic, Inc., San Diego, CA, 1965 - 320 pages

Front cover of this edition claims it is the first paperback unexpurgated edition published in the U.S., but this is doubtful as it's a confirmed piracy and the Delacorte Press, Berkley and Playboy Book Club unexpurgated editions were also issued in 1965.

The Ginger Man

Cloth | Ophelia, (an imprint of Olympia Press), New York, 1968 - 274 pages

Another of Girodias's attempts to cash in on the success of the book before all legal attempts to control the copyright failed and Donleavy finally prevailed worldwide. Dustcover flap has a typo reading: "Originally published in Paris in 1965." Should read: "1955." Scarce edition. Special thanks to bookseller, Nick Drumbolis, Letters Bookshop, for pointing out the typo.
