"And
Never forsake
Your sweet
Compassion."

- J.P. Donleavy from Leila

Sabrage: the art of opening a bottle of champagne by lopping off the top with a sabre (as performed by the Mental Marquis in the Darcy Dancer books) dates back to Napoleonic times when Madam Clicquot would give soldiers gifts of champage, and they would ride off opening the bottles with their swords.

Second book in the Darcy Dancer series, preceded by The Destinies of Darcy Dancer, Gentleman and followed by That Darcy, That Dancer, That Gentleman. Donleavy has mentioned in several interviews the desire to write a fourth book in the series. One source states that he is indeed working on the book, title yet unknown. There are apparently (according to a couple of emails I've received) at least two pronunciations of the name "Leila," the first being (Lee-eye-lah) and the second, (Lay-lah) as in the Eric Clapton song.
